(December 24, 2024) Kakao announced that CEO Shina Chung visited Kakao Data Center Ansan on the morning of December 24 to ensure the stable delivery of its services. The visit was conducted to inspect the infrastructure and service stability of various Kakao platforms ahead of the year-end and New Year’s holidays, when traffic surges on KakaoTalk are expected due to Christmas and New Year’s greetings.

KakaoTalk handles an average of 45,000 messages per second, with over 10 billion messages sent daily. During the transition from December 31 to January 1, traffic spikes to more than three times the usual volume, and during major events, traffic can increase up to tenfold.

After receiving a briefing on the data center’s operational status and stability measures, CEO Chung addressed the employees on-site, saying, “The data center is the heart of Kakao’s services. Your efforts enable users to share important moments through KakaoTalk. Please continue to connect the people’s daily lives with a sense of mission and responsibility.”

Kakao has consistently worked to ensure that users’ critical moments of connection remain uninterrupted by leveraging its expertise in handling peak traffic. Based on this experience, the company plans to ensure service stability during the holiday season by maintaining systems such as server expansions, emergency staffing, and traffic distribution measures.

Kakao has also implemented a comprehensive framework to enhance stability, including systematic incident response, strengthened monitoring systems, simulated failure drills, information security measures, redundancy systems, and a Business Continuity Plan (BCP).

Kakao Data Center Ansan, located on the ERICA campus of Hanyang University in Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do, is a hyperscale facility spanning 47,378 m2, with 4,000 server racks with a capacity for over 100,000 servers. The center was completed in September last year to bolster infrastructure reliability and began operations in January this year. (End)
