[July 20, 2023] Kakao Krews had the opportunity to meet with a world-renowned AI scholar and discuss the present and future of AI.

Kakao Corporation, under the leadership of CEO Hong Eun-taek, welcomed Professor Andrew Ng from Stanford University, USA, for an insightful fireside chat at their Pangyo headquarters. This event provided a platform for Kakao employees to delve into various AI-related topics.

Professor Andrew Ng, counted among the top four AI scholars globally, is the founder of Landing AI and Deep Learning AI and the initiator of Google's Brain Project. He has also spearheaded machine learning, voice recognition search, and autonomous vehicle development at China's Baidu. Ng's establishment of Coursera, an online education platform offering free machine learning courses, cements his influential role in AI education and research.

In an effort to make AI—a key industry buzzword and a pivotal technology for the future—easily understandable and usable for all its Krews, Kakao has been proactive in organizing seminars and internal events. These initiatives, starting with the 'AI Experience-thon' in April, have been instrumental in keeping their teams abreast of the latest trends and knowledge in AI ethics and public welfare. This meeting with Professor Ng is part of these efforts.

Professor Ng discussed with hundreds of Kakao Group members under the theme "The Future and Direction of AI." Sharing his opinion that the generative AI market will likely snowball, Ng labeled the current period as a prime opportunity in the AI landscape. With an emphasis on the need for technology to benefit everyone, he also underscored the significance of 'Responsible AI.' Ng expressed confidence that, as with many emerging technologies, AI would continually evolve to address challenges and seamlessly integrate into everyday life.

Concluding, Professor Ng remarked, "Korea is prominent in the AI market, showing notable AI expertise in academia and industry. Hearing about various projects currently considered within Kakao was particularly intriguing."

Before the fireside chat, Kakao executives, including CEO Hong Eun-taek, Strategy Planning Group Head Shin Min-kyun, Kakao Brain Co-CEO Kim Byung-hak, and Kakao Ventures CEO Jeong Shin-ah, held a separate meeting with Professor Ng. They exchanged views on AI's developmental direction and deeply discussed Kakao's new initiatives in the AI industry.

A Kakao representative stated, "We are committed to continuous engagement and development in the AI sector, a new growth engine," adding that Kakao plans to persistently advance in AI research and development while introducing unique AI models and vertical services. (End)
